FOURTH ANNUAL SOYBEAN RUST SYMPOSIUM INCLUDES SOME BOMBSHELLS
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — The American soybean industry has changed dramatically since soybean rust was found on our shores in late 2004 – and so has our understanding of Phakopsora pachyrhizi, the fungal pathogen that causes the disease. Five years after soybean rust was discovered in Louisiana, more than 130 scientists at the American Phytopathological Society’s Fourth National Soybean Rust Symposium in December shared both good and bad news....download release (pdf)»

David Wright joined the Iowa Soybean Association in July 2001. As director of contract research and strategic initiatives, his responsibilities include providing strategic direction to the Iowa Soybean Association and providing oversight for soybean research conducted at land grant universities, including Iowa State University.

Dr. Wright also provides strategic direction to, and manages research investments of, the North Central Soybean Research Program a collaboration of 12-state checkoff boards. This novel program pools funding from checkoff boards and invests in research that affects soybean producers throughout the United States.

He guides university research by prioritizing projects that produce the best combination of short- and long-term results to improve the profitability of soybean producers.

In one of his most critical roles to date, Dr. Wright had a leading role in a multi-state effort to prepare U.S. soybean producers for the arrival of Asian soybean rust. He was instrumental in engaging the University of Florida in the fight against soybean rust by gaining access to their research and education facilities and staff at Quincy, FL. This research station is now the center of a multi-disciplinary research effort into the biology and epidemiology of soybean rust and the development of best management practices used to manage this potentially devastating soybean disease.

He also leads a grower education effort to improve decision-making skills by delivering science-based information and management recommendations to soybean producers and crop specialists.

He is currently leading an effort to develop trans-disciplinary research to address the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on Midwest cropping systems.

Prior to joining the Iowa Soybean Association, Dr. Wright served as a regional agronomy services manager for Cargill Hybrid Seeds. In this capacity, Dr. Wright led Cargill Hybrid Seeds’ U.S. soybean research and development activities. He was also responsible for corn product development and agronomic sales support for the Eastern United States.

Dr. Wright is the 2009 recipient of the Henry A. Wallace award bestowed by the Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was raised on a row crop, dairy and livestock farm in central Iowa. He holds a Doctorate in agronomy from Kansas State University, and Masters and Bachelors of Science degrees from Iowa State University.
